The Neuroscience Review is an independent publication run by Cameron Hunterton. This page explains what information the site handles when you read it, subscribe to the newsletter, or send something in. The short version is that we collect very little, we do not sell anything about you, and you can ask us to delete what we hold at any time.
What we collect and why
- Your email address, only if you subscribe. When you sign up for the newsletter, we store your email so we can send you new posts, and we keep it only until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
- Anonymous traffic numbers. We use a privacy-friendly analytics tool to see how many people visit and which pages they read. It does not use tracking cookies, it does not follow you around other sites, and it does not build a profile of you. We see totals and trends, not individuals.
- Anything you choose to send us. If you email us, submit a note for a community feature, or send a correction, we receive whatever you put in that message, such as your name and what you wrote. Anything you send in for a community feature, such as The Commons, may be published and shown publicly on the site and our related channels.
- A theme setting that stays on your device. If you switch between light and dark mode, your browser remembers that choice locally. It never reaches us.
We do not ask for or store payment details, government identifiers, or any sensitive personal information, because the site does not need them.
The tools we rely on
Running an independent publication means using a few outside services, and your information passes through them only so the site can work.
- Buttondown handles the newsletter and stores subscriber email addresses.
- Cloudflare provides the anonymous, cookieless web analytics and helps route and protect the site, which can involve handling basic request data such as IP addresses.
- GitHub Pages hosts the website files and, like any web host, may log basic request data such as IP addresses for security and reliability.
- Google Fonts serves the site's typefaces, so your browser fetches those font files from Google when a page loads.
- Substack and Bluesky may carry versions of our posts if you follow us there, under their own policies.
Each of these companies has its own privacy policy, and we pick tools that treat readers with respect. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to anyone.
Cookies and tracking
We do not run advertising trackers, and the analytics we use set no tracking cookies. The only thing stored in your browser is the light or dark theme preference described above, which stays on your device.
Your choices
- You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link in the footer of any email.
- You can ask us to delete the email address or messages we hold for you. Just write to the address below and we will take care of it.
- You can read the whole site without subscribing or sending us anything at all.
Links to other sites
We link out to journals, press offices, and other sources so you can check the science for yourself. Once you follow a link away from here, that site's own privacy practices apply, not ours.
Children
The site is written for a general adult audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles information, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Meaningful changes will be easy to spot.
